Beat the Heat at Walt Disney World: 6 Tips That Will Save Your Summer Vacation
If you've ever visited Walt Disney World during the summer, you already know one thing is guaranteed:It's going to be HOT.Not "Minnesota in July" hot. I'm talking about the kind of hot where you step outside your resort and immediately question every decision that brought you to Florida in August.
The pool at Disney’s Art of Animation resort has as much appeal as park and offers a great spot for a midday break!
The good news? You don't have to spend your vacation miserable. With a little planning, you can avoid the worst of the heat, keep everyone happy (including yourself), and still experience all the Disney magic.
Here are my favorite strategies for surviving—and even enjoying—a summer Disney vacation.
1. Rope Drop Is Your Best Friend
If you're visiting during the hottest months of the year, your park strategy should look different than it would in January.
Arrive early.
Not only are the temperatures much more comfortable, but you'll also find shorter wait times and sometimes even walk-on attractions.
Use those cooler morning hours to:
Ride attractions with long outdoor queues
Knock out your highest-priority rides
Take advantage of lower crowds
Think of rope drop as accomplishing everything important before the Florida sun decides to become angry.
2. Take The Midday Break (Seriously)
This is probably the number one piece of advice I give families.
You do not need to stay in the parks from open until close to get your money's worth.
In fact, I think you'll enjoy your vacation more if you don't.
Head back to your resort during the hottest part of the day and:
Swim
Take a nap
Grab lunch
Watch Disney on the resort TV
Relax in the air conditioning
When everyone has cooled down (literally), head back into the parks around dinner as temperatures begin to fall.
This strategy is amazing with toddlers—but honestly, adults benefit just as much.
3. Hydrate Before You're Thirsty
Once you feel thirsty, you're already behind.
Disney makes staying hydrated surprisingly easy.
Every quick-service restaurant will provide complimentary cups of ice water, and many have self-serve water stations inside their dining rooms.
I always recommend bringing:
A reusable water bottle
Electrolyte packets
Plenty of water breaks throughout the day
Florida humidity is on an entirely different level, and staying ahead of dehydration makes a huge difference.
4. Dress For The Weather (Not Instagram)
I know.
As someone who creates Disney content, I understand wanting the perfect outfit.
But trust me...
Your future self will appreciate comfort far more than that cute pair of shoes.
My hot-weather Disney essentials include:
Moisture-wicking clothing
Comfortable walking shoes
Shorts
Sunglasses
A hat or visor
Cooling towels
Sunscreen (and don't forget to reapply!)
You can absolutely still look cute while dressing smart.
Your feet will thank you.
5. Use Mobile Order
This is one of my favorite Disney planning hacks.
Instead of standing outside in a lunch line while Florida slowly cooks you, place your order through the My Disney Experience app while you're waiting for your next attraction.
By the time you're finished riding, your food is usually ready.
Less standing.
More eating.
More air conditioning.
Everybody wins.
6. Schedule Indoor Attractions During Peak Heat
Between roughly noon and 4:00 PM, intentionally shift your plans toward indoor attractions.
Here are some of my favorites.
Magic Kingdom
Mickey's PhilharMagic
Hall of Presidents
Country Bear Musical Jamboree
Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room
Bonus: Grab a Dole Whip afterward.
EPCOT
Spaceship Earth
The Seas with Nemo & Friends
Journey Into Imagination with Figment
American Adventure
The aquarium inside The Seas pavilion is also a wonderful place to cool off while kids watch fish, turtles, and seahorses.
Hollywood Studios
Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
Disney Junior Dance Party
The Little Mermaid show
Animation Courtyard
These are fantastic opportunities to sit down, cool off, and still experience great entertainment.
Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom tends to feel hotter than the other parks, so indoor breaks are especially important.
Don't skip:
Festival of the Lion King
Finding Nemo: The Big Blue... and Beyond!
Sometimes twenty minutes in air conditioning is exactly what your body needs.
My Favorite Disney Heat Hacks
These are the little tricks experienced Disney visitors use that many first-timers overlook.
Get Free Ice Water
Skip buying bottled water every time you're thirsty.
Ask for complimentary ice water at quick-service restaurants and refill your reusable bottle throughout the day.
Think About The Queue
Don't only compare wait times.
Compare where you'll be waiting.
A 35-minute indoor queue can be much more enjoyable than 20 minutes standing in direct sunlight.
Use Gift Shops As Cooling Stations
You don't have to buy anything.
Many Disney gift shops are connected and fully air conditioned.
Walk through, cool off for five minutes, browse new merchandise, and reset before heading back outside.
Let Kids Play In Splash Areas
If you're traveling with little ones, pack:
Crocs
Water shoes
An extra shirt
The splash pads around the parks can completely change everyone's mood.
Happy kids are cool kids.
Don't Skip The Shows
Disney shows are one of the best ways to recharge.
They're:
Air-conditioned
Entertaining
Comfortable
A built-in rest break
Sometimes sitting down for 30 minutes is exactly what your vacation needs.
Make Lightning Lane Work With The Weather
Book outdoor attractions in the morning.
Save indoor attractions for the afternoon.
It's a simple adjustment that makes a surprisingly big difference.
My Disney Summer Park Bag Essentials
These items never leave my park bag during summer trips.
Rechargeable handheld fan
Cooling towels
Portable charger
Electrolyte packets
Refillable water bottle
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Optional UV umbrella for extra shade
Individually they seem small.
Together, they're vacation savers.
The Most Important Tip: Listen To Your Body
This may be the most important advice in this entire article.
Disney is exciting.
It's easy to keep pushing because you've spent a lot of money and only have a few vacation days.
But if someone in your group starts feeling:
Dizzy
Nauseous
Unusually tired
Headachy
Stop, find air conditioning, drink water, and take some time to rest!
Every Disney park has a First Aid location staffed by professionals.
There is no prize for pushing through heat exhaustion.
The goal is magical memories—not miserable ones.
Final Thoughts
For years, I avoided summer trips to Walt Disney World because I assumed the heat would ruin the experience.
Now?
I've learned that summer Disney can be absolutely magical—it just requires a little more planning.
Work with the weather instead of fighting it.
You'll spend less time recovering from the heat and far more time making memories with your family.
